Parts
of the Lizard are underlain
by a unique metamorphic rock-
serpentine, dark green veined
with red and white, easily worked
into lampholders, paper weights,
ash trays, Lighthouses, clocks
and other souvenirs.
The
Lizard is famous for the ornamental
working of Serpentine
Stone with its lovely
greens, red, yellow and white
lines running though it. There
are local shops in the village
and a serpentine turners on
the Lizard Point even one at
Church Cove, where it is available
to buy in interesting shapes.
Serpentine
was one of the rocks thrust
up from underneath the crust,
which was rich in iron and magnesium.
When the Rheic Ocean crust became
what is now Cornwall, peridotite,
was changed to serpentinite,
or serpentine - one of the Lizard's
most beautiful rocks.
